Morgens um halb zehn Uhr kam eine Rauchwolke in Sicht. Als wir nahe genug waren, sah der Kommandant durch das Sehrohr, dass es ein unbewaffneter neutraler Dampfer war. Wir tauchten daher auf und gaben einen Schuss ab. Das genügte schon. Die Besatzung stieg aus und vier Mann von uns fuhren zum Dampfer, legten die fünf Sprengpatronen und kamen dann auch gleich wieder zurück. Auf Befehl des Kommandanten wurde diesmal nicht gekapert. Es war der norwegische Dampfer Lovstakken, 3.100 Tonnen groß und auf dem Weg von England nach Amerika. Binnen zehn Minuten war er in den Fluten des Ozeans verschwunden.
At half past nine in the morning, a cloud of smoke came into view. When we were close enough, the commander looked through the periscope and saw that it was an unarmed neutral steamer. We therefore surfaced and fired a shot. That was enough. The crew disembarked and four of our men went to the steamer, placed the five explosive charges and then came straight back. On the commander’s orders, we did not capture the ship this time. It was the Norwegian steamer Lovstakken, 3,100 tonnes in size and on its way from England to America. Within ten minutes, it had disappeared into the ocean.
