Doch kaum hatten wir angefangen, als der Telegraf ging und für beide Maschinen «Alle Kraft!» anzeigte. Schnell ging es hinter dem Feind her. Um 20 Uhr wurde das erste Rohr schussfertig gemacht und um 20.56 Uhr kam das Kommando: «Achtung, los!» Nur 16 Sekunden brauchte der Torpedo, dann hatte er sein Opfer erreicht. Die Beute war ein Dampfer von ungefähr 3.000 Tonnen. Lange Zeit brauchte er, fast eine Stunde, um von der Bildfläche zu verschwinden. Es kamen auch noch drei Fischdampfer zu Hilfe. Doch das Loch, das der Torpedo gerissen hatte, war zu groß und so konnten sie weiter nichts tun, als dem Werk der Vernichtung zuzusehen.
We had hardly started when the telegraph went off and announced “Full speed!” for both machines. We quickly went after the enemy. At 8 p.m. the first tube was made ready to fire and at 8.56 p.m. the command came: “Attention, go!” The torpedo took just 16 seconds to reach its victim. The prey was a steamer of about 3,000 tons. It took a long time, almost an hour, to disappear from the scene. Three trawlers came to its rescue. But the hole the torpedo had torn was too big and so they could do nothing but watch the work of destruction.
